Wapiti
For those that dare, a wapiti hunt in New Zealand’s Fiordland will be one the most challenging and inspiring adventures, they will ever undertake. Situated on the southwestern corner of New Zealand’s South Island, this rugged section of virtually untouched wilderness, which consists of a labyrinth of heavily forested glaciated valleys that rise almost perpendicular to open tussock tops high above, will test both the mental and physical endurance of the most hardened hunter.

Lashed by severe weather systems, emanating from the southern ocean, the area receives unbelievable amounts of torrential rain, totalling well over 6000mm (240”) per year. Gale force winds so intense, even the hardiest sole will at some stage experience waves of fear while hunkered down inside a flimsy mountain tent, sitting out a raging Fiordland storm.

Whilst the conditions are forbidding, for those that have hunted there, the area holds special significance in their heart. The breathtaking scenery, the spine tingling echo of a bugling wapiti bull, the aura one feels, upon setting foot in an area so wild and stacked with history, because of wapiti and the legendry names that have hunted there, gives credence to the saying ‘Until you have hunted Fiordland you’ve hunted nothing’!!
